Microsoft has made Windows 10 (Technical Preview Edition ) a free download. You simply register with Microsoft and download Windows 10 and install it on your PC.
Here is the link to Windows 10 Download. Microsoft, however forces automatic update for Windows 10, as the option to turn off Automatic Update is turned off or grayed out. This makes sense, as critical bugs are fixed, Microsoft would push the fixes to anyone that has installed Windows 10. But what if you want to control the Automatic Update, as you don't want frequent reboots. You simply want to download and update your system at your convenience. Below is simple instruction to change Windows 10 Automatic Update Settings.
1. Go to your registry by invoking Run, and RegEdit.
2. Go to the following registry address:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Auto Update\AUOptions
Set AUOptions to one of the following options. (Please note that we do not recommend option 1 as your system will never get the latest Microsoft updates.)
1 -> Never check for updates (not recommended)
2 -> Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them
3 -> Download updates but let me choose whether to install them
4 -> Install updates automatically (recommended)
