When it comes to photography, not everyone is a professional photographer, nor does everyone carry a professional DSLR camera on a daily basis. This is where we rely on our smart phone cameras to quickly take pictures and video of loved ones, record videos at birthdays, vacations, or any other events. As far as the smartphone camera is concerned, the Samsung Galaxy S5 offers a competitive edge over its competition. Under the right conditions, the S5 takes some excellent pictures and videos even in low light conditions. I have tried numerous times to take some pictures and videos in both outdoor and indoor areas with bright and low-light conditions, and 90% of the time, my efforts resulted in great pictures and videos. I have taken the pictures below with minimal effort which resulted in outstanding pictures, in my opinion:
I have not had much luck however, when I try to use the zoom feature of this device. The camera does not offer Video Stabilization in 4K mode, and without Video Stabilization, you will definitely need a camera mount and a tripod to take some crisp and clear pictures and videos. At the max zoom, the camera shakes constantly even with the slightest movement. Pictures below were taken with the max zoom, and as you can see the details are blurry.
Picture above resulted in blurry detail when zoomed in
Although Samsung's S5 flagship has been criticized for the lack of picture quality in low light, I was quite pleased with the results of my pictures in low light conditions. The S5's camera provides one of the fastest auto-focus features on any smart phone.
I have yet to play more with the various settings that Samsung provides on this device, and there are plenty of modes, scenes, and features under the sitting of this device that you can play with to achieve the desired results. I recommend you take 20 minutes or a ½ hour to explore the settings and features of the camera on the Galaxy S5 before you head out on your next trip or planned event to take some pictures.
In conclusion, the Samsung Galaxy S5 really takes some great pictures out of the box, but once you tweak the camera settings, you can take some fantastic pictures and videos with this phone. I have tried it in both, bright light and low light conditions, and I was quite pleased with the desired results. There are however, some other smart phone cameras such as the Sony Xperia Z2 that outperforms the S5. But the Sony Xperia Z2 is not readily available in all markets, and especially here in the US it could take a few months before its availability is announced. I will try the S5’s camera capability with a tripod and camera mount, so please stay tuned and I will release some videos and pictures in the near future.
