OnePlus Z: Strong Competitor to the iPhone SE and Pixel 4a

OnePlus has released the 8 Pro and the 8, but one question remains in tech enthusiasts and OnePlus fans: Where is the OnePlus 8 Lite that was rumored?

The OnePlus 8 Lite has had no sign of release from OnePlus and it was a phone that was highly expected as it's specs seemed promising for the entry-level market. However, new leaks have come out that promise the OnePlus 8 Lite to be a strong competitor to the iPhone SE and Google Pixel 4a.

To start, the leaks now give the 8 Lite a new name, the OnePlus Z. According to Max J on Twitter, the OnePlus Z will have the Snapdragon 765G chipset rather than the originally rumored MediaTek 1000 chipset. Although that MediaTek 1000 chipset is quite capable for performance, battery, and gaming, having a Snapdragon 765G chipset will be an upgrade although not as amazing as having the 865.

The reasoning for why OnePlus could be using the 765G rather than the any of the 865 lineup is cost. In order to bring cost, OnePlus chose to use a chipset that isn't as powerful as the 865, but is nearly just as capable. However, there is one detail to note about the 765G chipset, and it is that it will be 5G capable. To have a capable 5G chipset at the entry-level price point will be a feature that will make OnePlus stand out.

Another thing that was leaked was the fact that the OnePlus Z will have a July release. This is quite perfect timing. As the current global pandemic begins to slow down and life attempts to return to normality in some places, it will allow people to begin to have jobs once again. With many jobs lost, the economy isn't doing so well. We are at a time in which buying a high-end flagship isn't necessarily a good idea. So for someone needing a new phone now, they will most likely be looking at the mid-range and entry-level market to find something. If OnePlus has a competitive price of $400-$550, then we could be talking about a strong competitor or even replacement to the iPhone SE and the Google Pixel 4a.

In the end, the OnePlus Z seems to be a strong choice for the entry-level market. Will it be capable of being a substitute to the iPhone SE and/or Google Pixel 4a? That is hard to answer as the iPhone will have it's A13 Bionic chip, which is one of the fastest chipsets currently available. And OnePlus will most likely once again have a tough time trying to compete against both devices in the camera quality department, as OnePlus has had the notion on delivering high-end specs, but with a mediocre to proficient camera.
